Words are divided into eight classes according to the work, which they do in sentences. They are called parts of speech. 1. Noun: The name of any thing we can think of Delhi, Chair, Ramesh, Book etc. I live in Delhi. 2. Pronoun: A word which is used for a noun. Ramesh is very intelligent but he is very naughty. 3. Verb: A word which says something about a person or thing: I speak English. 4. Adjective: A word which adds to the meaning of noun or pronoun; Big, fast , slow, large, beautiful 5. Adverb: A word which adds to the meaning of a verb, an adjective or another adverb: She sings well. You run very fast. 6. Preposition: A word which is put before a noun or pronoun to show some relation: The book is on the table. The class starts at 10 a.m. 7. Conjunction: A joining word; and, so, because etc. 8. Interjection: A word which expresses some sudden feelings of joy, sorrow, and surprise etc. Hurrah!, Alas!, Wow! Exercise:- (Elementary) Pick out the parts of speech from the sentences and name them: 1. Saleem reads a book. 2. She sings well. 3. He is very intelligent. 4. It is my book. 5. I travel by train. 6. Hurrah! I won the match. 7. What a beautiful flower! 8. The dog barks at night. 9. They went home happily. 10. Rohit and Javed went to the market. 11. The Sun rises in the east. 12. Raju and I learn English. 13. My pen is expensive. 14. He is laughing. 15. You friend is very clever. |
