In the active voice, the subject of the verb is the person or thing that does the action. In the passive, the subject (or in other words the object in the active) has the focus. The action is done to the subject in the passive..
Ex. I invite you for party. (Active voice) . You are invited for party. (Passive voice). Note- We can only change transitive verb into passive voice. Intransitive and linking verb can not be turned to passive voice. We form the passive by adding be + past participle.. Ex. English is spoken all over the world.. If the subject in the active voice is important as an agent, it is mentioned as by + agent in the passive voice. Ex. The college was inaugurated by the president.. When there is unknown vague or unimportant subject in the active voice, we may not repeat the subject of the active in the passive voice. Ex. Someone constructed this building in 2005. This building was constructed in 1832.. The present continuou – be (is / are / am) + being + the past participle.. The past continuous – be (was / were) + being + the past participle. Ex. 1. A new college is being built in this area.. 2. Cars are being repaired here.. Passive of the present perfect & past perfect. The Present Perfect:- Have / Has + been + the past participle.. The past perfect: Had + been + the past participle.. Ex. 1. Thieves have been arrested. . Passive with the modals . The basic modal form in the passive voice is modal + be / have been + past participle Ex. This problem can be solved.. .
