Preposition of place / position In, at, on We use in before the name of a continent, a state, a town, a city or a village. Ex. He was born in India. I live in India. We use in before the name of a road, a street, a room and any other enclosed space big enough to be all around a person. Ex. The farmer was sleeping in the field. It was dark in the room. We use at to describe a position. Ex. I am standing at the door. We use at for a house or an address. Ex. He lives at 32, station Road. On has the meaning of on the surface. The book is on the table. To & Into To indicates movement towards a building, place, Country etc. Ex. They went to the market in the evening. Into indicates movement into a room, building, river etc. Ex. He ran into the room. Preposition of Time At is used with an exact point of time e.g. 5 o’clock, at 9.30, at midnight. It is also used with meal time e.g. at lunch, at dinner and with festivals such as at X’mas, at Dussehra etc. Ex. My class starts at five o’clock. We are going to have a party at Diwali. /> On used with a more general point of time such as days of the week, dates and parts of the days. Ex. He gave us a gift on Sunday. His birthday falls on 10th May. In is used with months, years, seasons Centuries & parts of the day. Ex. The elections will be held in February. India won Independence in 1947. For and during We use for to express a period of time. For two years, for five hours. Ex. We played cricket for 10 years. We use during + noun to say if something happened continuously or several times in a period of time. Ex. During winter, during the vacation By and until / till By is used to express not later than:- Ex. I will reach home by 5 o’clock. Till / until is used to indicate that a situation continues for sometime and then stops. Ex. We worked in the library until 8 o’clock. Until / till can also be used to indicate that something didn’t / will not happen before a particular time. The library was not opened till 11 O’clock.
