The present Continuous Tense
The present continuous is formed with the Present form of the auxiliary be (is/ am / are) + the Present Participle (V + ing) form of the main verb.
Example: He is reading a book.
If a verb ends in – e, we omit the – e and add – ing. For example use, using.
If a verb has a single vowel followed by a single consonant, we double the final constant: hit / hitting.
We change – ie to y : lie / lying.
Uses of the present continuous tense.
1. The present continuous tense is used for actions that are happening or are in progress at the present moment. We can use adverbials such as now, in the morning. Just etc.
The dog is barking.
2. To describe temporary situations, happenings which are not habitual actions. Ex. I’m working in a bank these days.
3. To express future with reference to a definite plan, arrangement or program – usually, an adverbial of future time such as tomorrow, tonight next week etc. is used.
