The indefinite article ‘A’ / ‘An’ A / An is used before a singular countable noun. We use ‘a’ in front of a word that begins with a consonant sound and ‘an’ in front of a word that begins with a vowel sound. A Book An Apple A Pen An Eye An old book The definite article: The 1. The is used before planets and stars:- The sun, the earth, the Jupiter etc. 2. We often use ‘the’ before a noun which has become definite because it has been mentioned a second time. I have a book. The is used with superlatives and first second etc. This is the best book in the library. You are the first person to band the bus. 5. The is used before words referring to nationality. The Indians are honest and civilized. 6. The is used before musical instruments. The piano, the guitar etc. The Zero article 1. We do not use any article before proper nouns and before the names of countries, cities, towns and villages. 2. When uncountable nouns are used in a generic sense. Example: Water is necessary for life. 3.
