The Past Continuous Tense
Uses:- The past continuous is used for actions which were in progress or continued in the past. It does not indicate the beginning or the end of the action. It may be used with a specific point of time.

Expressing Future Time
There are several ways of expressing future time in English.
Use of will / shall
Will / shall + the base form of the verb is used to make a predication of an event.

Conditional Sentences
I conditional
The first conditional is used for a possible future action which depends on another action.
Ex. 1. If Ravi works hard, he will pass the exam.
2. If we go by bus, it will be cheaper.
‘If’ can be at the beginning of a sentence or in the middle.
It will be cheaper if we go by bus. After ‘if’, we use the present (not will).
we say if you see ……… (not If you will see)
Exercise – (Elementary) Use your own ideas to complete the sentences:-
1. I’m going to the concert if ___________
2. If you don’t hurry ___________
3. I don’t want to go out if ___________
4. If you go to bed early tonight, ___________
5. Turn the television off if ___________
6. Ravi won’t pass his exams if ___________
7. If I have time tomorrow, ___________
8. We can go to Agra tomorrow if ___________
II Conditional
1. Second conditional is used for an imaginary situation where the meaning is in the present.
Ex.: If he had the money, he would buy a fast car.
Usually had is past, but in this sentence had is not past.
If he had the money = If he had the money now
2. It can also be used for a remote possibility in the future.
If I won the contest, I would go on a world tour.
3.II conditional is also used for giving advice.
Ex. If I were you, I would stay at home.
‘Were’ is usually preferred to ‘was’ in this case.
Exercise (Intermediate)
Put the verb in the correct form using II conditional:-
1. If you could change one thing in the world, what ___________? (you / change)
2. It’s a pity you have to go now. ___________ nice if you had more time. (It / be)
3. If ___________ nearer Mumbai, we would go there more often. (We / live)
4. If the car broke down, ___________ what to do. ( I / not / know)
5. I don’t want to go out. If I ___________ to go out, I’d go. (wish)
6. I don’t know the answer. If I ___________ the answer. I’d tell you.(know)
7. We haven’t got a key. If we ___________ a key, we could get into the house. (has)
8. I m not hungry. I would have something to eat if I ___________ hungry.(be)
9. You can’t drive. If you ___________ , I would lend you my car. (know/driving)
10. It’s not a very good hotel, ___________ there if I were you. (I / not/ stay)
III conditional: III Conditional is used for an imaginary situation referring to a past action:- Ex. 1. If he had worked had, he would have passed the examination.
2. he had not stolen the money, he would not have gone to prison.
Exercise :- (Advanced) Put the verb into the correct form:-
1. I don’t know you were in hospital. If ___________ (I / know), ___________ (I / go) to visit you.
2. John got to the station in time to catch his train. If ___________ (he / miss) it. ___________ (he / be) late for his interview.
3. It’s good that you reminded me about Ann’s birthday ___________ (I / forget) if ___________ (you / not / remind) me.
4. If ___________ ( I / have) your address, ___________ ( I / send) you a postcard.
5. I wasn’t tired last night. If ___________(I / be) tired, I would have gone home earlier.
6. I took a taxi to the hotel but the traffic was very bad. ___________ (It / be) quicker if ___________ (I / walk)
7. Out holiday was ok, but ___________ (we / enjoy) it more if ___________ (the weather / be) better.
8. I’m not tired. If ___________(I / be) tired, I’d go home now.
Use of I wish and if only.
I wish and if only are both used when the speaker would like a situation to be different.
Ex. I wish I could go to the party (but I can’t).
For a wish about the future, use would or could.
Would is often used when the speaker is complaining about something.
Ex. I wish he would not use my phone too much.
I wish you would be quiet.
For a wish about the present, use past tense after I wish and If only.
Ex. I wish he didn’t smoke so much. (He smokes a lot)
For a wish about past, use the past perfect after I wish and if only.
Ex. She wishes she had married him (but she didn’t marry him)
